Frequently Asked Questions

1. How much will a website cost?

See our section on pricing.

2. How much will maintenance of the site cost?

See our section on pricing.

3. I don't want to have to pay CW every time I need a change to the content of the site. Can I change the content myself?

Yes. The answer is a Content Management System (CMS). A simple CMS allows the website owner to modify text, graphics and even style, and a more complex CMS provides for multiple updates from many users working at any web-enabled PC. Ideally the decision to include CMS should be made early in the design life cycle. Contact us for more details.

4. I want my new domain to be registered in my name. Is this possible?

Yes. We will register the domain in your name, and you will be the legal registrant. However, in order for us to do the administration on your behalf, we will insert our own IPS TAG (UK domains only), which makes us the "registrant's agent". We can change this at any time free of charge.

5. I've got a domain name already registered. Can CW still organise the hosting of the site?

Yes. Simply change the name servers to ns1.turbodns.co.uk and ns1.turbodns.co.uk. If you would like us to administer the domain on your behalf, change the IPS TAG to "S2CONSULTING" (UK domains only). Note that this does not change the identity of the domain name registrant. It simply makes us the "registrant's agent". If you wish to change these details back to their original setting, we will do this free of charge.

6. I want to arrange hosting of the site myself. Is it still feasible for CW to do the development work?

Yes. We develop the site locally then upload to the server when the site is complete. In order to do the upload, you will need to tell us the FTP address, username and password. If this does not suit, we can let you have all the source files on a disk, for you to do the upload yourself.

7. What is the current legal position for accessibility? Does my site have to comply with the rules?

Website owners have a legal responsibility with regards to the accessibility of their websites under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (UK). Similar legislation exists in other countries e.g. New Zealand. This Act makes it unlawful for companies to provide an inferior service to, or discriminate against, a disabled person. Although no one has yet taken a claim against a website owner in the UK to court, you need to take reasonable steps to ensure that your website can be used by people with visual impairments or physical disabilities.

8. I've got a simple template site that I bought from Yell.com. Why do I need a tailor-made website?

There are many ways to give your business a presence on the web. Some of these can appear very cheap. For instance, you can purchase a template site, fill in a few details about your company, and publish it to the Web. However, a service such as this is cheap for a reason - it lacks many of the features your business needs: The site will look identical to many other sites. It will not promote or enhance your corporate image. It will not be optimised for the search engines, making it nearly impossible for visitors to find. It will not be designed according to the Accessibility Guidelines, making it in contravention of the Disability Discrimination Act. It cannot be extended as your business grows. A cheap solution can be actually detrimental to your company's image and hence its profit margin.

9. I have procured website development services in the past from small companies such as yours, and have been left without any support when they go bust. What security can CW offer?

When registering your domain name, we ensure that you are the legal registrant, i.e. the website owner. Therefore you have full control over your site. Also, on request, we can deliver all source code for the site so that you are free to make changes or approach another designer to do the work on your behalf.
